Rent Saves Dollars and Makes Sense

Rental is quite a common way to do things and has been for at least 40 or 50 years.

When I want to move, I rent a truck. When I want to travel, I fly to my destination and call Avis Rent or Enterprise Car rent. If I want to open a business, I find an office for rent. I've only owned a home once, and that by virtue of marrying in a common law state. Otherwise, I always prefer to rent. While I may stay in a place for 5 years, I am not committing to being there for 10 or 20 or 40 years.

Easy peasy, as they say.

We rent homes, cars, time, offices, and why? Well, usually for short term use of a thing. Renting is a way to have what we need without having to pay for the whole thing, too. College students are probably the most likely to go for home rentals, as well as younger people. By the time we're in our 30's or so, most of us have started to think of buying our own home. We have a job, or a profession. Maybe we need the tax breaks that owning a home may afford.

Rental of a car or truck is different, though. I've moved a lot in the past several years. I always rent a truck. I can't quite imagine what I'd do if I didn't. Sure, I may have friends with Suburbans and pick ups, but if I rent a truck, I can put everything I own in one truck and haul it all in one trip. The cost per mile and gas is a little high, but usually I can do it in a small truck and pay less than $100 for the whole thing. If I had a whole 3 bedroom house full of stuff, it would be a bit more, but still far less than professional movers and far more efficient than several friends with trucks making lots of trips.

I prefer to drive my own car when I travel. I've driven from Colorado to South Carolina and from Colorado to California. It's possible to do either in a day, and it's even easier if you take two days to do it and stay somewhere on the way. But when airlines and Avis rent or Enterpise Car Rent are all having specials, I can save a couple of days, or even 4 days, by renting. That makes a week long trip into a weekend if that's what I want. And I do arrive a lot more rested. Driving 20 hours isn't necessarily anyone's idea of a good time. So rental makes more sense.
